SUNNAH-JUMMA WITH AUTHENTICATION

SUNNAH-JUMMA WITH AUTHENTICATION

O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday, hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic): That is best for you if you but knew!

👉 Best day of the week - Friday

Abu Hurairah [‫رضى الله عنه‬] reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created; on it he was made to enter Paradise; on it he was expelled from it; and the [last] hour (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) will take place on no day other than Friday.” (Sahih Muslim)

1. To *take bath on Fridays* is a highly stressed sunnah

Narrated Ibn `Umar [‫رضى الله عنه‬]:

While `Umar bin Al-Khattab was standing and delivering the sermon on a Friday, one of the companions of the Prophet(ﷺ), who was one of the foremost Muhajirs (emigrants) came. `Umar said to him, "What is the time now?" He replied, "I was busy and could not go back to my house till I heard the Adhan. I did not perform more than the ablution." Thereupon `Umar said to him, *"*Did you perform only the ablution although you know that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to order us to take a bath (on Fridays)?"*

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 878

2. Using *oil and perfume* on Friday.

Narrated Salman-Al-Farsi [‫رضى الله عنه‬]

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumua prayer) and *does not separate two persons sitting together* (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven."

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 883

3. *Praying Fajr* in congregation on Fridays

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar [‫رضى الله عنه‬] said: The Messenger (ﷺ) said: “The best prayer before ALLAH ( ﺳﺒﺤﺎﻧﻪ ﻭﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ ) is Fajr prayer on Friday in congregation.”
Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Eemaan; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1119

4. To *recite in Fajr* on Friday

Chapter: What should be recited in the Fajr prayer on Friday

Narrated Abu Huraira [‫رضى الله عنه‬] The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite the following in the Fajr prayer of Friday, "Alif, Lam, Mim, Tanzil" (Suratas- Sajda #32) and "Hal-ata-ala-l-Insani" (i.e. Surah-Ad-Dahr #76).

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 891

5. *Wearing best clothes* for Jumua and not stepping over the necks of people (creating distraction)

'Abd Allah b. 'Amr al-'As reported the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: Whoever washed himself on Friday and applies perfume of his wife if she has one, and wears good clothes and does not step over the necks of the people (in the mosque to sit in the front row) and does not indulge in idle talk during the sermon, that will atone (for his sins) between the two Fridays. But he who indulges in idle talk and steps over the necks of people (in the mosque), that (Friday) will be for him like the noon prayer.

Grade: Hasan, Sunan Abi Dawud 347

6. Expiation of all *minor sins Friday to Friday*

Abu Huraira [‫رضى الله عنه‬] reported: Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The five (daily) prayers and from one Friday prayer to the (next) Friday prayer, and from Ramadhan to Ramadhan are expiations for the (sins) committed in between (their intervals) provided one shuns the major sins.

Reference : Sahih Muslim 233c

7. Reading *Surah al-Kahf.*

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khduri [‫رضى الله عنه‬] that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on Friday, he will be illuminated with light between the two Fridays.”

Narrated by al-Haakim; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 836

8. *Coming early for Jumua*

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah [‫رضى الله عنه‬] that: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever performs ghusl as from janabah on Friday, then comes (to the masjid), it is as if he sacrificed a camel. Then the one who comes in the second hour, it is as if he sacrificed a cow. Then the one who comes in the third hour, it is as if he sacrificed a ram. Then the one who comes in the fourth hour, it is as if he sacrificed a chicken. Then the one who comes in the fifth hour, it is as if he sacrificed an egg. Then when the imam comes out, the angels attend to listen to the khutbah."

Sahih, Sunan Nasai book 14, Hadith 25
Eng: Vol. 2, Book 14, Hadith 1389
Arabic ref:Book 14, Hadith 1399

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) was asked: When does the first hour of Friday begin?

He replied: The hours which were mentioned by the Prophet (ﷺ) are five. So the time between sunrise and the imam’s arrival is divided into five parts, each of which may be equivalent to what we know as an hour (60 minutes), or it may be more or less, because time changes.

9. *Blessing of Jumu'a-10 days of sins are forgiven*

Chapter: The Blessings Of The Friday Prayer

Abu Huraira [‫رضى الله عنه‬] narrated: If anyone performs ablution, doing it well, then come to the Friday prayer, listens and keeps silence, his sins between that time and the next Friday will be forgiven, with three days extra; but he who touches pebbles has caused an interruption.

Grade: Sahih, Sunan Abi Dawud 1050

Do not play with pebbles, carpet, strings , or smartphones.

When the evidences are taken all together, it indicates that the expiation of sins from one Friday to the next is subject to all the conditions being met, performing ghusl, cleaning oneself, putting on perfume, wearing one's best clothes, walking in a calm and dignified manner, not stepping over people, not pushing between two people, not offending others, praying nafl prayers, listening attentively and avoiding idle speech.

10. *Keeping quiet during Friday sermon*

Chapter: One should keep quiet and listen while the Imam is delivering the Khutba

Narrated Abu Huraira [‫رضى الله عنه‬]: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done an evil act."

Ref: Sahih al-Bukhari 934

Even telling your muslim brother to keep quiet is evil. So imagine the importance given to listening to the Friday sermon. The scholars recommended using actions and not words to convey the message if you really need to while the Khutbah is going on.

11. *Huge reward for walking to Jumu'a early*

Chapter: Performing Ghusl For The Friday Prayer

Narrated Aws ibn Aws ath-Thaqafi [‫رضى الله عنه‬] I heard the apostle of Allah صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ say: If anyone makes (his wife) wash and he washes himself on Friday(Ghusl) , goes out early (for Friday prayer), attends the sermon from the beginning, walking, not riding, takes his seat near the imam, listens attentively, and does not indulge in idle talk, he will get the reward of a year's fasting and praying at night for every step he takes.
 ‬‬‬‬

Sunan Abi Dawud 345 and Tirmidhi 496

12. *Pray 2 raka'a nafl even if Friday sermon is going on*

Chapter: If A Person Enters While The Imam Is Delivering The Khutbah

Jabir [‫رضى الله عنه‬] said: A man came (to the mosque) while the Prophet (ﷺ) was giving the (Friday) sermon. He asked: Did you pray, so-and-so? He replied: No. He (ﷺ) said: Stand and pray.

Grade : Sahih, Sunan Abi Dawud 1115
13. *Come before the Imam starts*

Abu Hurairah [‫رضى الله عنه‬] reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “When Friday comes, the angels sit at the doors of the mosque and record who comes to the Jumu`ah prayer. Then, when the imam comes out, the angels roll up their scrolls.”

14. *Pray 4 in the masjid after sermon or 2 at home*

Abu Hurairah [‫رضى الله عنه‬] reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "If anyone of you performs the Friday prayer, he should perform four Rak'ah (Sunnah) after it."
[Sahih Muslim 881and Tirmidhi 523]

Chapter: Praying After The Friday Prayer

Nafi' said: Ibn 'Umar [‫رضى الله عنه‬] saw a man praying two rak'ahs after the Friday prayer on the same place (where he offered the Friday prayer). He pushed him and said: Do you offer four rak'ahs of Friday prayer ? 'Abd Allah (b. 'Umar) used to pray two rak'ahs in his house after the Friday prayer, and he used to say: This is how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did.

Sunan Abi Dawud 1127
and Sahih Muslim 882

15. *To keep the khutbah short*

Abu Wa'il reported........I have heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: The lengthening of prayer by a man and the shortness of the sermon is the sign of his understanding (of faith). So lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermon, for there is charm (in precise) expression.

Reference : Sahih Muslim 869

Chapter: Keeping the prayer and khutbah short

'Amra daughter of Abd al-Rahman reported on the authority of the sister of Amra:
I memorised (surah) "Qaf, by the glorious Qur'an" from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on Friday for he recited it on the pulpit on every Friday.

Reference : Sahih Muslim 872

16. *To recite surah al-a'ala and al-gashiya*

Narrated Samurah ibn Jundub:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite in the Friday prayer: "Glorify the name of your most high Lord" (Surah 87) and Has the story of the overwhelming event reached you? (Surah 88).

 ‏{‏ سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى ‏}‏ & ‏{‏ هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ ‏}‏ ‏

Reference : Sunan Abi Dawud 1125

17. *The hour of acceptance of supplication*

Narrated Abu Huraira [‫رضى الله عنه‬] Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) talked about Friday and said, "There is an hour (opportune time) on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while praying and asks something from Allah, then Allah will definitely meet his demand." And he (the Prophet) pointed out the shortness of that time with his hands.

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 935

18. *The time of that hour*

Abu Burda b. Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reported:

'Abdullah b. Umar said to me: Did you hear anything from your father narrating something from the messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about the time on Friday? I said: Yes, I heard him say from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (these words):" It is between the time when the Imam sits down and the end of the prayer."

Reference : Sahih Muslim 853

The other scholarly opinion is that it is the time after Asr on Friday.

And Allah knows best....

19. *Do not single out Friday for ibadah.*

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah [‫رضى الله عنه‬] that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Do not single out the night of Friday for qiyaam al-layl, and do not single out the day of Friday for fasting, unless that is part of the habitual fasting of any one of you.”

(Narrated by Muslim, 1144).

Al-San’aani (رحمه الله) said in Subul al-Salaam: This hadeeth indicates that it is haraam to single out the night of Friday for worship or reading Qur’aan that is not one’s regular custom, apart from that which is indicated in the texts, such as reading Soorat al-Kahf.

Al-Nawawi (رحمه الله) said: This hadeeth clearly states that it is forbidden to single out the night of Friday for prayer or the day of Friday for fasting. It is agreed (among the scholars) that this is makrooh.

And there are other acts of worship to be done on this day. So it is preferable not to fast, as this will help a person to perform these duties in an energetic manner and enjoy them without feeling bored or tired. This is like the pilgrimage on the day of ‘Arafah in ‘Arafah, because the Sunnah is for him not to fast on that day for the same reason.

20. *Do not miss Friday*

Ibn `Umar and Abu Hurairah [‫رضى الله عنه‬] reported: We heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying (while delivering Khutbah on his wooden pulpit), “Either some people stop neglecting the Friday prayers, or Allah will seal their hearts and they will be among the heedless.” (Sahih Muslim)
