💢 *The Term Ibadaah*
Part - 1
❖❐ Linguistic Usage of the Term:
💢 The term ibadaah has several different meanings. The basic concept implied by the root word "abd" is that of acknowledging someone other than oneself as holding supremacy or enjoying over-lordship and of abdicating one's freedom
💢 and independence in big favor, of relinquishing any resistance to or disobedience of him, and of surrendering oneself totally to his authority. Since slavery or bondage too are tantamount to similar status, the first sense the word conveys to the mind of any Arab is of this very factor, namely, slavery or bondage.
💢 Also, since the primary role of a slave is to obey his master and carry out his wishes, the word also carries the sense of submission and obedience.
💢 Next, a slave not only submits himself to the will of his master physically, but mentally too he accepts his supremacy, and if he at the same time has feelings of gratitude for his kindnesses and favors, he is inclined spontaneously to go out of his way in extolling the master and in showing respect and regard for him.
💢 He expresses and demonstrates his obligation in many ways to show his deep attachment, in a manner amounting almost to worship although, obviously, this comes into play only when, in addition to physical bondage, there is mental attachment too.
💢 In the language it means; "lowliness, submissiveness", giving the meanings of humbleness, being lowered, being submissive, and thus there are expressions used in the Arabic language. Also from the linguistic meanings of this word is "obedience (taa'ah)" and "inqiyaad (compliance)", "ta'alluh (devotion)".
💢 As for the Shari'ah definition, which is the precise reality of the worship which is requested in the Shari'ah, then amongst the definitions provided are the following:
💢 Raghib al-Asfahani said: "The wilfully chosen action devoid of bodily desires which arises out of an intention and by which nearness to Allah and obedience to the Shari'ah is intended." [Tafsil an-Nash'atayn wa't-Tahsil as-Sa'aadatayn, 157]
💢 Imam Baghawi said: "Ibadaah (is): Obedience (taa'ah) coupled with humbling of oneself (tadhallul), and submissiveness (khudu), and the slave (abd) is called as such due to his lowliness (dhillah) and his compliance (inqiyaad)." [Sharhu's-Sunnah, 1/53]
💢 Ibn Qayyim said: "Ibadaah unites two principles: The extremity of love with the extremity of humbleness and submissiveness. So whoever you loved but were not submissive to, you are not a worshiper of him, and whomever were submissive to without (showing) love, you are not a worshiper (of him) until you are (both) loving and submissive." [Madariju's-Salikin, 1/74]
💢 Ibn Kathir said: "In the legislation it is an expression for what combines the perfection of love (mahabbah) submissiveness (khudu) and fear (khawf)." [Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 1/25]
💢 Shaykhu'l-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: "A term that combines the perfection of love for Allah, in its greatest level, and the perfection of humbleness, in its greatest level. For love devoid of humbleness and humbleness devoid of love is not considered worship, rather worship is what combines between the perfection of both matters." [Minhaju's-Sunnah, 3/290]
