Envy is one of the deadliest diseases of the heart and it produces additional vices such as hypocrisy, backbiting, slandering, abuse, taunting, and torturing, all of which are grave sins. This hideous condition makes the human heart so narrow and gloomy that its effects pervade the realm of one's inner and outer being. The fears and grief of the haasid revolve around the person or people of whom he is envious.

The fact is that envy is dangerous for us because it suggests that you hate Allaah(ﷻ)'s blessings and the way He has apportioned His provision to His servants. It suggests that you hate the justice and balance that He(ﷻ) has established, so you contest it.

When this envy is directed towards the believers, it is a means of immigrating Iblees and the non-believers because they love that crises befall the believers and that they lose Allaah's blessings.

Allaah(ﷻ) says:

*Or do they envy people for what Allaah Has given them of His bounty? But we had already given the family of Abraham the scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom.*
 (An Nisaa, 4:54)

Allaah(ﷻ) also told us in the Glorious Qur'an about the first son of Prophet Adam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) who killed his brother because of envy, and it was the first blood letting crime on the face of the earth. He envied his brother because Allaah(ﷻ) accepted his brother's sacrifice but did not accept his.

Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ) said:
*_“Beware! Do not bear enmity with the blessings of Allaah (ﷻ)" When asked about the people who bear enmity with the blessings of Allaah, he ( ﷺ) replied: “Those who are envious.”_*

(Al-Mu`tazali, Sharh Nahj al-Balagha, vol.1, p. 315)

Muhammad ibn Muslim reports that al-Imam al‑Baqir (رحمهم الله) said:
_“A man may be forgiven for something done in a fit of anger, but hasad devours faith as fire consumes wood.”_
 (Al-Kulayni, Usul al‑Kafi, vol. 2, p. 306, Bab al-Hasad, hadith no. 1)

How do you correct envy?

First, control yourself. Whatever action you took in the past because of envy, strive to do the opposite.

If envy has driven you to say something bad about a person, strive to compliment him/her.

If it drove you to look down upon someone or stop doing good to them, act with humility and apologize to them.

*May Allaah(ﷻ) protect us from any satanic influences*

آمين يا رب العالمين
